Manchester United are considering a blockbuster move for Cole Palmer

The Red Devils have a lot of crucial decisions to make between now and the start of the 2026/27 season. The glaring issue currently at Old Trafford is their lack of permanent manager, following the club’s decision to axe Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge.

As well as their search for a new head coach, United want to bring in marquee players to improve their performances on the pitch. They are preparing to attempt a move for boyhood United fan Palmer, who would automatically replace Bruno Fernandes if he leaves Manchester this year.

Man United ‘ready’ to move for Chelsea’s Cole Palmer

According to Football Transfers, United are ‘ready to make a blockbuster move’ for Palmer, while Chelsea are said to be ‘open’ to selling him.

Several reports have claimed the Blues are considering cashing in on the 23-year-old, who joined the club in 2023 from Manchester City. Chelsea signed Palmer for an initial £40 million, back when he was representing England U21s.

The versatile midfielder is now a regular in the Three Lions senior set-up and has a Transfermarkt value of €120 million (£104m). Even if Chelsea are willing to listen to offers, Palmer is not going to come cheap once the summer transfer window rolls in.

The player himself is said to ‘appear to be open’ to the idea of leaving Chelsea, which could make for a very interesting transfer saga in the lead-up to the summer. Palmer has missed a chunk of this season due to injury but he contributed 18 goals and 14 assists in all competitions last term.

Man United long-term admirers of boyhood fan Cole Palmer

United have a ‘long-standing admiration’ of Palmer and have reportedly already held ‘behind-the-scenes’ talks about tabling a bid for his services.

Signing the England international would not only be a staggering move from a business point of view, it would also be a significant moment for both club and player. Palmer grew up supporting Man United and has publicly spoke about his love for the club, despite his career starting at Man City.

Last year, Palmer admitted he enjoyed returning to Old Trafford to play games with Chelsea. Their latest clash at the Theatre of Dreams was in September 2025, which ended 2-1 to United after a red card for both sides.

“When I do go back to the stadium, it's good because I used to go and watch matches there,” Palmer told Sky Sports (via Goal). He also revealed club legend Wayne Rooney was his role model while growing up.

“Obviously I supported United and he was probably the best player when I was watching them.”
