Man United are considering who will become their caretaker manager until the end of the season

Manchester United are expected to confirm their appointment of a caretaker manager before they host the Manchester Derby next weekend.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City will visit Old Trafford on January 17th, eager to get a win on the board after drawing their last three matches. United have also drawn their last three fixtures, including their latest 2-2 result against Burnley under interim boss Darren Fletcher.

The Red Devils are considering their options for Amorim’s long-term replacement but the immediate plan is to bring in a caretaker boss until the end of the season. There is speculation over who that will be but right now, nothing has been confirmed.

Man United to decide on caretaker manager for 2025/26 season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick are two names in the spotlight right now as United carefully consider their temporary manager choice. Both figures have played and coached at the club and United are fond of them both, but it is unlikely they will try to bring them in as a unit.

Other names linked with the position include Carlo Ancelotti, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, according to The Mirror. The trio of managers each have significant Premier League experience and all three have managed Chelsea at some point in their careers.

Another thing all three have in common is that they are currently managing international teams. Tuchel replaced Gareth Southgate as England manager at the start of 2025, while Ancelotti departed Real Madrid in May to join the Brazilian national team.

Pochettino is currently in charge of the USMNT, having signed in September 2024 after mutually agreeing to part ways with Chelsea four months earlier.

Man United will not consult Fergie over manager decision

Along with their search for a temporary fix, United are looking for their third full-time manager since 2024 and seventh since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. The legendary manager remains heavily connected to United, despite no longer being in his previous role of global ambassador.

Despite having the influence of Ferguson if needed, the United board have ‘no plans’ to consult with him over who the next permanent manager should be.

The club’s decision-makers, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, are ‘confident’ of making their decision without Fergie’s input.

Roy Keane recently questioned who is making the decisions at his old club and jibed about the lingering presence of Sir Alex Ferguson, who won 38 major trophies with Man United over a 26-year reign.

“Who is making the decisions at United? You have still got Ferguson and David Gill hanging around like a bad smell,” Keane said on Thursday on Sky Sports.

“Who is making the decisions? [Sir Jim] Ratcliffe, Wilcox? Who is going into the interview process, getting a feeler for them and saying, 'this is the guy for us'.”
