Gordon Hill urges Man Utd to give a chance to ‘well-prepared’ manager who ‘knows what’s needed’

The Manchester United managerial debate is set to move into another week, but club legend Gordon Hill is convinced of the perfect name for the job.

Darren Fletcher is currently at the helm of affairs for Man Utd, with names like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick, and Ruud van Nistelrooy in the frame for the job.

That is to say nothing of the impending chaos in the summer for a permanent manager, all of which is contributing to a lot of uncertainty.

WHO is your pick from Carrick, Solskjaer or Van Nistelrooy?🤔

All three have impressed as players and coaches at Old Trafford, which do you want as caretaker?

Man Utd legend Gordon Hill has now moved to clear that confusion, saying that he’s ‘tired’ of the names being thrown around because there’s clearly one outstanding candidate.

Gordon Hill backs Darren Fletcher for the job

Fletcher’s first game at United might have seen the club drop two more points against obliging opposition, but the difference in the playing style and the mood around the club was clear.

United attacked with fearlessness and purpose, and Shea Lacey’s cameo off the bench summed up the best of the “United DNA”.

It was a game that would have thrilled the traditionalists, and Gordon Hill was among those moved by Fletcher’s United.

He wrote on X, “I urge United to give Darren Fletcher a chance. Darren and Johnny Evans are in the club and know what is needed. I am tired of the names being branded around. Leave him alone to try and get the team playing.”

It’s no surprise that Hill is backing Fletcher for the job, because the United man gave the fans exactly what they were missing in the 2-2 draw against Burnley.

Having said that, United have been here before, where they got swept up by the euphoria of having an old flame back at the club and put aside their long-term plans for it.

They need to make a more measured decision this time, but Fletcher is certainly feeling ‘well-prepared’ for the role.

Man Utd fans could be forgiven for having a sense of deja vu at reading Hill’s comments, because this is how Solskjaer also earned his permanent job.

However, when Solskjaer became United manager, he had a spell with the club’s academy and a head coach role in Norway with Molde on his CV.

Fletcher, on the other hand, has not just been at United since his retirement, but also performed multiple roles under multiple managers, making him more equipped for the job, in his opinion.

Fletcher said: “I’ve enjoyed the challenge of it. I’ve tried to relish it. I’ve tried to go with my instincts. As I said, I think I’m quite well prepared.

“It’s something I always thought that I would maybe be quite good at or something I’d enjoy doing or enjoy the challenge of, but at the same time, I wanted to be really careful and make sure I was ready for that if that moment came.”

Fletcher is clearly willing to throw his hat into the ring for a more permanent role, at least until the summer, and more performances like that against Burnley will help his case.

Ineos have a decision to make and the clock is ticking.
