Ruben Amorim’s promise to Man Utd fans is set to be put to the test after his departure

Ruben Amorim made a lot of lofty promises to Man Utd fans while he was at the club and while most have turned out to be hollow, the fans need his next one to be true.

After the shock sacking of Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher is taking charge of Man Utd’s games until a proper interim manager sees through to the end of the season.

As soon as Amorim was sacked, the mind instantly went to what he said at the end of the last season, when he promised that the “Good days are coming”.

WHO is your pick from Carrick, Solskjaer or Van Nistelrooy?🤔

All three have impressed as players and coaches at Old Trafford, which do you want as caretaker?

Fair to say that the promise is already broken, but Amorim also promised something else recently, which will be put to the test soon.

Ruben Amorim’s promise after Wolves game

As the details around Amorim’s exit have emerged, it’s clear that the wheels were set in motion after the Newcastle game, where United won 1-0, but Amorim sacrificed his principles.

The team played a back-four that day, something Amorim “corrected” immediately by reverting to a back three against Wolves.

It wouldn’t have helped his case that the results and performance promptly took a step back when he did so, but a defiant Amorim promised Man Utd fans something.

He said at the time that there is ‘no doubt in my mind’ that the poor performances were down to the missing players, and that United will be a ‘much better team’ when he has all the players back.

He said: “I’m really confident [that] when we recover all the players, we are going to be a strong team – there is no doubt in my mind.”

As it turns out, when the players recover, he won’t be there to oversee the improvement that he promised to the fans, but the fans will badly want at least this promise to come true.

Amorim’s Utd was less than the sum of its parts

There’s merit to Amorim’s claim that the poor performances were down to missing many players, but how does that explain results against Everton, West Ham, or Nottingham Forest, just to name three?

Amorim had the full squad available to him effectively at the time, and yet, the team looked devoid of ideas and inspiration to take the game by the scruff of its neck.

Amad and Bryan Mbeumo are both returning now, with Amorim not here anymore, and they might realise soon that this team is better than what Amorim was managing with it.

He was a master communicator who had the fans hanging on to his every word, but, ultimately, the results don’t lie, and often, the performances matched those results.

Perhaps it’s for the best that Amorim won’t be here to oversee another one of his promises to completion. It sums up his tenure at Old Trafford.

Many words, bold claims, but flattered to deceive when it mattered the most – on the pitch.
