Former Man Utd coach steps down from new role after just four months, Carrington return makes sense

Former Manchester United academy youth coach Adam Lawrence has cut his time at Newcastle United short.

During his time as Manchester United Under-18s coach, Adam Lawrence won a treble of the U18 Premier League North, National League, and the U18 Premier League Cup.

In his final season in charge of the U18s, Adam Lawrence lost just once in 24 league games, only missing out by two points while also reaching the FA Youth Cup semi-final.

It was confirmed in May that Lawrence left United looking for a new opportunity to advance his coaching career.

Lawrence was linked with Newcastle, and in September, it was confirmed that he took charge of Newcastle’s U21s.

Adam Lawrence leaves Newcastle after four months

Lawrence’s time at Newcastle did not exactly go to plan, with the Magpies youth side currently sitting 24th out of 29 sides in Premier League 2.

He took charge of his final game on Friday, where Newcastle suffered a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

It continues a recurring theme of failed appointments between Newcastle and United, including Dan Ashworth’s five-month stint as sporting director at Old Trafford.

When announcing Lawrence’s exit, Newcastle United Academy Director, Steve Harper said: “I’d like to thank Adam for his time with us leading the Under-21 group. We wish him the best of luck as he pursues the next step in his coaching career.”

Man United should bring Adam Lawrence back to Carrington

Current United interim head coach Darren Fletcher was appointed as Under-18s coach at Carrington as Lawrence’s successor, but he has now stepped up to take control of the first team.

It is not yet confirmed where Fletcher’s future lies at United. He has made it clear he is open to becoming interim first-team head coach until the end of the season.

It means that United have vacancies in their academy roles, and Lawrence would be welcomed back with open arms.
