Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has described the situation at the club as "really difficult" since Ruben Amorim was sacked. United sacked Amorim amid rising tensions with the board, and Darren Fletcher was promoted from the academy to take interim charge of the team.

Fletcher oversaw his second game in charge against Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday, but United suffered a 2-1 defeat to crash out of England's oldest cup competition at the first opportunity. United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup second round by Grimsby Town in August, meaning the defeat to Brighton ensures there will be no silverware won at Old Trafford this term.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Dalot said: "We created enough to win the game, to be honest. Then the red card gave us a disadvantage because we were on top of Brighton in the last moments. Overall, very disappointed because we wanted to go through. All the lads kept trying to find spaces, like I said, really disappointed because I think we deserved to win."

The defender was asked what the mood has been like since Amorim was sacked. "Really difficult," he responded. "It's always a period that you have to find ways to solve problems really quickly. We have to adapt and go again."

Fletcher was visibly disappointed when he spoke to TNT Sports. "We didn't play enough balls in behind and test them. You need to move the ball with tempo," he explained.

"We got back to 2-1 and the energy was up but ultimately we couldn't get over the line. I think you can see the players are fragile. You need to dig deep. The fans weren't happy at the end, they have every right to do that. I'm sure if the players show the right reaction, the fans will get behind them like they always do."

United's defeat means they will play just 40 games this season, their fewest in a campaign for 111 years.
