Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has dismissed reports of turning down a new contract as "fake news" following Manchester United links. The Spanish tactician was mooted as a possible target to replace Ruben Amorim after he was sacked from his Old Trafford post.

Reports sparked a frenzy this week when the former Barcelona head coach was said to have refused a new contract at the Champions League holders. The 55-year-old has over 12 months remaining on his current deal at the French giants, however it was claimed that he felt he had achieved all he can in the capital after a glut of silverware during his three-year spell so far.

Oliver Glasner, Eddie Howe and Thomas Tuchel have been credited as potential candidates to become the next permanent manager in the Old Trafford hotseat.

Speculation regarding a potential move for Enrique have intensifed since reports that an extension has been turned down.

However, ahead of PSG's derby with Paris FC in the Coupe de France, the 55-year-old rubbished the reports insisting that they won't destabilise the squad.

He said: "These are rumours that always circulate at PSG.

"We are used to them, they are private matters and will remain so. There is a lot of 'fake news' and they will not destabilise either the players or the team.

"It's normal to have talks, but they remain private. We know what we want, and that's the most important thing. We are calm and relaxed."

Darren Fletcher was installed as the temporary manager, in light of Amorim's dismissal on Monday, and was in charge of the 2-2 draw with Burnley in the Premier League before they exited the FA Cup at the first hurdle to Brighton & Hove Albion with a 2-1 loss.

The Mirror understands that the club are weighing up the appointment of a more experienced caretaker until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick among the names in contention.

Speaking ahead of the visit from the Seagulls, Fletcher said: "I've tried to prepare myself to be a manager.

"It is something I always thought I might be quite good at or that I'd enjoy doing and enjoy the challenge of.

"But at the same time I wanted to be really careful and make sure I was ready for when that moment came.

"It's not something I'm desperate to do - circumstances in life dictate that, and I've experienced how intense it has been as a manager for less than a week. There's not much time for much outside football.

"But if I prepare myself and the opportunity comes for me one day, I know I'll be ready. If it doesn't and it means staying as the under-18s coach, I'll be more than comfortable with that as I'm going to help develop players for Manchester United."
