Darren Fletcher will report to Carrington on Monday morning as Manchester United aim to confirm an interim head coach appointment within the next couple of days, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. Fletcher is set to speak to chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox on Monday as the club look to finalise an appointment for the remainder of the season.
Berrada and Wilcox have spoken to frontrunners Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick recently, while Fletcher has taken charge of the games against Burnley and Brighton. The 41-year-old is in contention to land the job for the rest of the season but his case has been damaged by a failure to land a win in his two games in charge.
Fletcher was placed in caretaker charge after Amorim was sacked on Monday morning. He guided United to a 2-2 draw at Turf Moor on Wednesday when they produced an encouraging performance, but they regressed against Brighton in the FA Cup and were beaten 2-1 to end their hopes of winning silverware this season.
The Scot will now report to Carrington on Monday, with United looking to confirm an appointment in the next few days. They face Manchester City on Saturday, and preparations for the Old Trafford derby will step up on Wednesday, with the club likely to be keen to have the new man in by the middle of the week.
"I have to report tomorrow morning to Carrington. That's all I know. So I'll find out whatever I need to find out tomorrow morning," said Fletcher.
Asked if he had an indication of what was likely to happen, he said: "I've had zero indication. All my energy and focus and concentration had to be on these two games and such a quick turnaround to prepare the team. I genuinely mean that. It's a massive responsibility to lead this club.
"I've given it my best, and ultimately, I'm disappointed to not be able to win a game or to get a result today. But I feel like there were some good things in there, created a lot of chances, shots, things like that.
"But ultimately it wasn't enough. So I am more disappointed than anybody really because I care for the club and I want the club to do well. I want the players to do well. And I tell you what, it's not about me. I've had my time as a player. It's in the bank now, it was fun. Loved every minute of that. I was very lucky.
"It's all about them. But we need to help them. The club need to help them. And they need to help themselves."
