Danny Welbeck claims he can't give away the secret to his late-career form otherwise "drug testers will come" after his goal knocked former side Manchester United out of the FA Cup.

The striker, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford but was sold over a decade ago, has now scored five times for the Seagulls against his former side. His latest strike saw him hammer a left foot strike into the top corner as his side secured a 2-1 win in Manchester.

Despite being 35, Welbeck is continuing to perform and contribute, leading to talk of an England recall with the World Cup just months away. The forward claimed his form is down to his preparation, discipline and dedication, but joked that some may think of other factors.

He said: "I can't give away my secret. If I say too much, drug testers will come for me! I'm good, I'm clean, I've got good genetics, good family. My mum and dad blessed me with good genes. A lot of hard work. I work hard every day, I look after myself. I eat well, prepare well for every single training session. I'm feeling good, feeling strong."

Welbeck is refusing to get carried away ahead of the major tournament in America. Thomas Tuchel has shown he's more than willing to overlook big names in a bid to prioritise players in form.

He claimed: "Do you know, for me, I'm focussing on the here and now. I'm enjoying my time. I know in football it can change at the click of your fingers, anything can happen. So I'm just really enjoying the present, and looking after myself, and just controlling what I can control. I feel good."

Welbeck's exploits with Brighton, who are six points outside the top four in what is a congested Premier League table, will be key to any possible recall with the Three Lions. The striker was full of praise for his side as they continued their impressive Old Trafford record - where they've won on their last four visits.

"It's massive," he said. "To come here in the FA Cup - whether it's FA Cup or Premier League, it's always a massive occasion - it's one that we're delighted with, to get into the next round. There's a few boys that haven't been playing regularly, so to put on the performance that they did was huge. It shows the depth of the squad, everybody's working towards one goal and we're all buzzing inside the dressing room."

Welbeck scored 11 times last season, which was the first time he'd hit double figures since 2018. This term he's on course to surpass that again having found the net eight times already - Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Leeds is the only Englishman to have scored more than the Brighton man this term.
