'I let everybody down'- Shea Lacey sends heartfelt apology to Man United fans after red card

Manchester United were attempting to produce a comeback against Brighton before a late red card to Shea Lacey halted all momentum.

A 2-1 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford means that Manchester United have crashed out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

In what was likely his final game as interim head coach, Darren Fletcher lashed out at the referee, claiming the decision to give Shea Lacey a red card was “ridiculous”.

Shea Lacey picked up two yellow cards in quick succession towards the end of the match. The first was for a late challenge and the second for throwing the ball in frustration after not being awarded a throw-in.

It means the 18-year-old is now suspended for the upcoming Manchester derby.

Shea Lacey apologises for red card vs Brighton

Fletcher jumped to Lacey’s defence in his post-match interview, reassuring the teenage winger that he is one of United’s most promising talents.

Lacey was visibly distraught and left the pitch in tears after being sent off. After taking time to reflect, he has now sent a message to United fans.

Via Instagram, Lacey wrote: “I want to apologise to all of my teammates, staff and the fans.

“I let everybody down tonight. I shouldn’t let my emotions get the better of me, I will do everything I can to make this right.”

Lacey was enjoying his third senior appearance for United, and also his longest after coming on as a substitute for Mason Mount around the hour mark.

Fletcher is not wrong in his assessment – Lacey is one of United’s most promising talents.

He has already shown huge glimpses of promise early on in his United career, including against Brighton before being given his marching orders.

Lacey’s apology shows a strong mentality and that the teenager is willing to take responsibility for his actions.

With Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo returning from AFCON, it is about to get much harder for Lacey to get first-team minutes.

But his future is undeniably bright at United, and he has already proven that he can be a threat against Premier League sides.
