Scotland star nets two equalisers to earn draw at Inter

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay was Napoli’s saviour at the San Siro as he netted twice in a 2-2 draw with Internazionale.

McTominay was on target in each half for Gli Azzurri in a dramatic match that saw Napoli head coach Antonio Conte sent off for protesting when Inter were awarded a penalty.

It did not deter his 29-year-old talisman, who bagged his fourth and fifth Serie A goals of the season in what could turn out to be a valuable point in Napoli’s defence of the Scudetto.

Napoli had dropped points earlier in the week with a 2-2 home draw with Verona and it was important for Conte’s men not to lose further ground to their title rivals.

Leaders Inter - the team they pipped to glory last season - started well in front of a passionate home crowd and took the lead on nine minutes when Federico Dimarco netted after good work from Marcus Thuram.

Napoli got themselves level on 26 minutes when Eljif Elmas drove down the left and fired a cross low into the penalty box for McTominay to meet first time and fire the ball emphatically past Yann Sommer.

Conte given his marching orders

Napoli conceded a penalty on 73 minutes when Amir Rrahmani was adjudged after a VAR call to have fouled Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the box. Conte was dismissed by referee Daniele Doveri for his protestations and Hakan Calhanoglu made no mistake from the spot.

McTominay, however, was not to be denied and he hooked in Napoli’s leveller on 81 minutes after Noa Lang has squared a deep cross back to him.

It was a frustrating night for Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund, who led the line for Napoli but was largely kept quiet by the Inter defence. McTominay’s Scottish Napoli teammate Billy Gilmour remains sidelined by injury.

The result leaves Napoli joint-third with Roma in the table on 39 points. Inter top the charts on 43, with AC Milan next on 40.
