Manchester United are now set to appoint former Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick as their interim manager

United sacked Ruben Amorim last week and Darren Fletcher has been in temporary charge. He oversaw a 2-2 draw with Burnley on Wednesday night and on Sunday was in the dugout as United lost 2-1 to Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup third round at Old Trafford.

An appointment of an interim boss until the summer is expected this week with Carrick now the most likely, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Carrick has spent time in charge of Championship side Middlesbrough and did take charge of three games for the Red Devils when Solskjær was sacked back in 2021.

The club held talks with Carrick on Thursday and then had discussions with Solskjær on Saturday, Fletcher had also been under consideration to remain in charge until the end of the campaign but he is no longer in the running. Solskjær had been the leading candidate for the interim role but that is no longer the case with a twist taking place in the search.

There are just 17 games left this season for the Red Devils after they failed to qualify for Europe and have been knocked out of both cup competitions at the first hurdle.

It has been a tough campaign for United but they are still in the mix to finish in the top four come the end of the season, as they are just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

Giving an update on United’s search for a new manager, Romano said on his YouTube channel: “Manchester United are ready to appoint their new caretaker manager from now to the end of the season, and in the last 12 hours, we can confirm that Michael Carrick made important progress in talks with Manchester United.

“Because an interview, face-to-face, took place with Michael Carrick, as it took place also with Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the two main candidates in the last five to six days to become new Manchester United manager.

“And in the last 24 hours, Michael Carrick is really becoming the leading option for Manchester United interim job. The understanding is that the meeting between Manchester United management and Michael Carrick was very, very positive, in terms of ideas, in terms of tactics, in terms of communication, (2:23) in terms of intention, the feeling was very good during the meeting between Manchester United and Michael Carrick.

“We wait for an official decision, but as of tonight, we can say that over the weekend Manchester United made important progress in conversations with Michael Carrick. The option for Darren Fletcher was never the favourite option.”

He added: “So, Fletcher is out, Solskjaer is hoping, but Carrick is now the favourite candidate to become new Manchester United interim manager.”
