Danny Welbeck comments on Man Utd defeat might have identified ideal Ruben Amorim replacement

Manchester United are plunged into another crisis after their elimination from the FA Cup, and former player Danny Welbeck might just have identified the man to save them.

It was like clockwork for Man Utd as they were at the end of another defeat at Old Trafford at the hands of Brighton, with Danny Welbeck on the scoresheet.

Neither of those two things is shocking anymore, and that sums up the sad state of affairs at Old Trafford.

Should we just re-sign Danny Welbeck at this point? He seems to love scoring at Old Trafford

Welbeck has made it a habit of scoring against Man Utd, regardless of the club he plays for, as he did so against Arsenal as well.

In many ways, he represents the essence of the club which has been lost, as he’s a hard-working model professional who thrives in big moments, who was cast aside for flashy names at Old Trafford.

Still, he remains a fan favourite, as evidenced by Man Utd fans applauding him off despite him scripting United’s elimination from the cup.

He might just have returned the favour with his comments after Man Utd’s defeat to Brighton, as he broke down how his team cut through United.

He said: “We do a lot of analysis throughout the week and try to exploit their weaknesses. We know the patterns of play we’re meant to produce on the pitch.”

There is a notable three-word phrase in those comments which has been the bane of the existence of Man Utd fans since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

It’s “patterns of play,” something which no Man Utd manager has been able to crack consistently.

Therein lies Welbeck’s hint at who the person to crack it could be.

Fabian Hurzeler is an exciting choice to be Man Utd manager

This might sound like a “flavour of the month” take, but Welbeck’s stress on the players knowing the patterns of play they have to execute is a big endorsement for Hurzeler.

The players having clear roles within a system, but with ample creativity to make decisions on their own, is the ideal mix that lies between Ruben Amorim’s rigidity and traditional United’s free-will.

Add to that Hurzeler’s Premier League experience, history of working within a footballing structure as a head coach instead of being a “manager,” and his young age, and he suddenly becomes an exciting choice to be United’s manager.

Unlike the likes of Oliver Glasner or Andoni Iraola, his style of play also isn’t entirely transition and pressing-based, with Brighton able to beat teams who sit in a low block as well.

The ultimate question will always be whether he has the personality to succeed at United, but he ticks every other box.

Ineos can do a lot worse than try to tempt Hurzeler in the summer, especially if the interest in Carlos Baleba remains.
