Carrick ahead of Solskjaer in the race for Manchester United interim manager

Manchester United are in the process of appointing an interim manager for the rest of the season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was said to be ahead of Michael Carrick for the role before the interview process.

But The Guardian report Carrick has now emerged as the favourite candidate to take over the club.

While the former Middlesbrough boss is yet to receive a formal offer, Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox are said to be leaning towards appointing him.

The decision is expected to be finalised on Monday, with the club’s hierarchy intending to give maximum time for the new coach to prepare for the visit of Manchester City on Saturday.

Darren Fletcher was in charge of the team on Sunday when United lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion to get knocked out of the FA Cup.

The result means the English giants have been eliminated from the FA Cup and the League Cup at the first opportunity for a first time since 1981-82.

That leaves them with only 40 games this season, which is their lowest in a complete campaign in 111 years.

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League standings, but could drop down to the bottom half by next month if they lose to City and Arsenal.

Criticism from fans against the INEOS group has increased recently following the shocking dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

They spent over £200 million on new signings in the summer to suit the Portuguese’s style of play, but then sacked him after he hit out at the hierarchy.
