Manchester United will look into how Bruno Fernandes was hacked on X, formerly Twitter. Fernandes' account was hijacked for over an hour following the FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday evening.

United's official account on X issued a statement to warn: "Bruno Fernandes’s X account has been hacked. Supporters should not engage with any of the posts or direct messages."

The X posts from the hacker on Fernandes' account went viral. “Let’s get rid of INEOS," was one of the messages posted from the account, which have all now been deleted.

United sources confirmed Fernandes' account is secure again, and the club will investigate how the hacker gained access. United could update their social media security recommendations to prevent a repeat.

Fernandes has 4.5million followers on X. The United captain last posted on the platform in October when he made his 300th appearance for the club in a win against Brighton.

The hacker gained access to the account just hours after United crashed out of the FA Cup at the first opportunity, meaning there will be no silverware at Old Trafford this season.

United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup second round by Grimsby Town in August. United will play 40 games this season, which will be their fewest in a campaign for 111 years.

Fernandes chose to stay in Manchester in the summer transfer window, turning down interest from Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal submitted a lucrative proposal for the midfielder, but he decided to continue at United.

The Portugal international's contract at United expires in the summer of 2027, with the option of another year.
