Manchester United 1-2 Brighton reaction and talking points after FA Cup exit
The latest on Man Utd's search for a new head coach to replace Darren Fletcher in a caretaker role.
It is one week since Ruben Amorim was sacked as United head coach, with Darren Fletcher placed in interim charge for matches against Burnley and Brighton. United used that temporary appointment to buy themselves time as they looked to hire a caretaker boss for the remainder of the campaign.
United will then look to appoint a permanent successor to Amorim in the summer, once they have had time to evaluate all the viable candidates for the role. Carrick will hope for a successful audition period should he get the caretaker role, with the former midfielder ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the race for the job after successful talks last week. Fletcher was also considered an outside shot for the position, but failed to win either of his two matches in charge.

Manchester United hope to have a new caretaker head coach in place ahead of their return to training on Wednesday morning. United will use the first two days of the week for rest and recovery sessions after their FA Cup third round exit to Brighton, before they return to full training in midweek.
If he is appointed, Michael Carrick will oversee three days of training with the first-team squad before his first match in charge against Man City on Saturday lunchtime. The 44-year-old would be set for a gruelling start to life as United head coach, with his second match a trip to face Arsenal in the Premier League the following weekend.
Carrick emerged as the new frontrunner for the caretaker role after he helped positive talks with the United hierarchy last Thursday. They also spoke with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the weekend, but there is a reluctance to go back to the same head coach the club sacked just over four years ago.
Former midfielder Carrick also previously took charge of United on a caretaker basis, when he replaced Solskjaer following his dismissal in November 2021. United won twice and drew one of his three matches in charge before Ralf Ranginick was appointed the interim for the remainder of that campaign.
