Michael Carrick managerial record after being named favourite for Manchester United head coach…

Manchester United 1-2 Brighton reaction and talking points after FA Cup exit

Man Utd will look to appoint a caretaker head coach until the end of the season.

Manchester United are close to appointing their new caretaker head coach who will oversee the club for the remainder of the season.

Darren Fletcher took charge of his final match as United interim head coach over the weekend, as United were dumped out of the FA Cup by Brighton at Old Trafford. It means United will play just 40 competitive matches this campaign, their fewest in a full season since 1914/15.

United placed Fletcher in interim charge for matches against Burnley and Brighton to buy themselves time as they looked to hire a caretaker boss for the remainder of the campaign. Carrick has emerged as the favourite for that role after he impressed during talks with the club hierarchy last week. The plan is still for United to hire a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim at the end of the season, once they have had time to evaluate all the candidates for the position.

Michael Carrick managerial record

Michael Carrick is the new favourite to be named Manchester United caretaker head coach and he will hope to emulate the success he achieved during his previous time in the role. The 44-year-old took charge of United for three matches after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021, and was unbeaten during his tenure in matches against Villarreal, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Carrick began his reign with a 2-0 away win over Villarreal as Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho scored to secure qualification to the Champions League knockout stages. Sancho scored again in Carrick's second game in charge as United grabbed a valuable point away at Chelsea with a 1-1 draw later that week. His final match in charge saw Ronaldo bag a brace and Bruno Fernandes score as United defeated Arsenal 3-2 at Old Trafford.

The former midfielder left the club with immediate effect when Ralf Rangnick took interim charge and he remained out of work until October 2022, when he was appointed head coach of Middlesbrough. The club were 21st in the Championship when he took charge, before he won 13 of his first 23 matches in charge and went on to finish fourth in the table. They were defeated by Coventry in the play-off semi-finals.

In his second season, Carrick was rewarded with a new three-year contract as Boro finished eighth in the Championship and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup. He was eventually sacked after his third season in charge when Middlesbrough finished 10th in the Championship table.
