Cobblers have been dealt a blow for the second half of the season following Manchester United’s unexpected decision to recall striker Ethan Wheatley.

The 19-year-old forward, who’s currently injured, joined Northampton on a season-long loan deal in the summer but, as with all loan agreements, there was an option for United to bring him back to Old Trafford in January and that’s something they have taken up.

Wheatley made a slow start to life at Sixfields but whilst he only scored three goals in 25 appearances, he became an increasingly influential presence in the team, and manager Kevin Nolan and his recruitment staff will now need to find a suitable replacement before the window closes on February 2nd.

Following confirmation of his recall, Wheatley said: "I have loved my time at Northampton Town. I'm very grateful to the manager and the staff who put their trust in me and helped me every single day, both on and off the pitch.

"I'd also like to thank the supporters for their backing home and away who have been superb this season. It has also been a pleasure sharing the dressing room with a great group of lads and I wish the club and everyone connected with it all the very best for the future."
