Kevin Nolan admitted he was ‘disappointed’ by Manchester United’s decision to recall Ethan Wheatley from his loan spell at Sixfields.
The 19-year-old appeared to be thriving during his time with Cobblers, improving week by week, but United have opted to cut short his loan stint ahead of potentially sending him elsewhere before the January window closes. According to BBC Sport, there is a ‘huge amount of interest’ in Wheatley this month and the plan is for him to ‘go out elsewhere’ for the second half of the season.
Wheatley played 25 times for Northampton but sustained an ankle injury against Huddersfield at the end of last month. He has missed the last two games and is expected to remain out for several weeks.
Nolan said: "We are disappointed Ethan has been recalled but we are proud of the work we have done with him and believe he leaves us a far better player than he arrived. Because of his injury picked up at Huddersfield in December, we were planning to be without him for a period anyway, but we thank Manchester United for loaning Ethan to us and wish him well for his future career.
"I know he enjoyed himself here, I know his family were appreciative of how we looked after him and I know Manchester United were pleased with how the loan went. With Elliott joining and new contracts for Kyle and Ross we have already strengthened this window, and with Ethan returning that opens another place in the squad."
