Man United have recalled loan star after'excellent'manager praise

Manchester United have been quiet in the January transfer window so far but they have exercised an option to recall an exciting loanee.

In the 2025/26 campaign, Manchester United have 18 players out on loan, ranging from exciting young players to senior stars who were pushed to the exit.

One of United’s most exciting prospects out on loan is Ethan Wheatley, who has spent the first half of the season at League One side Northampton Town.

Northampton manager Kevin Nolan called Wheatley ‘excellent’ after arriving at the club and hitting the ground running.

Wheatley quickly became a regular starter at Northampton, but United have intervened and cut his loan spell short.

Man United recall Ethan Wheatley from loan

According to the Northampton Chronicle & Echo, United have exercised the option to recall Wheatley in January.

Wheatley is currently nursing an injury, which could explain United’s decision, but his progress has been impressive at Northampton which suggests he could challenge for a first-team spot in Manchester.

Wheatley became Man Utd’s 250th academy debutant under Erik ten Hag, and the 19-year-old will be eager to get back in the Red Devils squad.

United are currently in the process of hiring an interim head coach until the end of the season, and the decision on Wheatley’s future could be decided by the new appointment.

Wheatley has scored three goals in 25 appearances for Northampton this season.

Ethan Wheatley reacts to Northampton loan ending

Wheatley was a popular figure at Northampton, so the sudden end to his loan spell may come as a shock.

After the decision was made, Wheatley took to Instagram to send a message to his fans.

“Want to thank everyone at Northampton Town for the last six months,” Wheatley wrote.

“Grateful to the manager and his staff who put their trust in me, and [it’s] been a pleasure to share the dressing room with the lads. Wishing them and the club all the best in the future.”

Wheatley will now return to Carrington and a decision will need to be made on whether he stays in Manchester or heads out on another loan for the second half of the season.
