Manchester United on the verge of appointing Michael Carrick as interim manager

Manchester United are preparing to finalise a deal for Michael Carrick to take over as caretaker manager, per journalist Samuel Luckhurst.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was initially thought to be ahead of Carrick in the race. But the English boss has now emerged as the favourite for the coveted role at Old Trafford.

The decision is expected to be finalised on Monday, with the club’s hierarchy aiming to give the new boss as much time as possible to prepare for Manchester City’s visit on Saturday.

Carrick has been out of a job since being sacked by Middlesbrough in July last year after the club missed out on a Championship play-off spot.

He led Boro to the play-off semi-finals in his debut campaign, despite the club sitting just a point above the relegation zone at the time of his appointment.

He guided them to an eighth-place league finish and the last four of the League Cup in 2023-24.

Carrick played as a midfielder for United between 2006 and 2018, winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League.

He remained at the club after retirement, joining Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff.

Solskjaer also retained the former England international, and he was named caretaker boss after the Norwegian’s reign ended in November 2021.

Carrick led United to victories against Villarreal and Arsenal, as well as a draw away at Chelsea, before Ralf Rangnick took over from him.
