'Final stages'- Fabrizio Romano provides update on Michael Carrick becoming Man Utd head coach

Manchester United are in the process of hiring an interim head coach to take charge until the end of the season.

Despite reports that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held positive talks about the vacancy, it seems as though Ineos would prefer Michael Carrick to take charge.

Carrick has impressed Ineos during talks, and he boasts an impressive record from his first stint as caretaker boss back in 2021.

“The negotiations are proceeding quite well, so Carrick is seen as the favourite to become the caretaker manager at Manchester United. The expectation is for Manchester United to complete everything very soon.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made himself available and he is hoping until the very end, but Carrick is now the man leading the race. A meeting took place in the last days, a very positive one.”

On X, Romano has revealed that Carrick has accepted all conditions of United’s contract proposal, with an agreement set to be completed imminently.

Michael Carrick’s first five games at Man United

Ahead of his appointment, United fans have shown confidence in Carrick, but the 44-year-old faces an incredibly tough start to his interim spell.

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton in Darren Fletcher’s final game in charge means that United only have Premier League football to look forward to for the remainder of 2025/26.

Carrick’s first two games in charge will be against Manchester City in the derby, followed by a trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The Red Devils will also host Tottenham in early January, meaning Carrick will face three of the ‘Big Six’ in his first five games.

United currently sit seventh in the Premier League table but are the same number of points off 12th as they are away from fourth. There is everything to play for.
