Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United look set to miss out on a move for Conor Gallagher as the ex-Chelsea man is wanted by Aston Villa

Thomas Frank’s side are already without James Maddison after a season-ending ACL injury and will now need to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements with Villa moving ahead of the pack in their bid to sign the La Liga man.

The move is a six-month loan with an option to buy. Giving a big update on the move, Fabrizio Romano said on X account: “More on Conor Gallagher. Aston Villa verbally agreed deal with Atlético Madrid today.

“Tottenham also asked for Gallagher deal conditions after Bentancur injury today. Villa had initial green light from Gallagher but waiting for next steps on player side.”

Reports in Spain last month said United had been lining up a £26m bid for the midfielder. Gallagher has been a regular in terms of appearances for Atletico this season, playing in 19 La Liga games, but he has only started four of those.

Having already played for England, Gallagher will undoubtedly have his eye on a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup in the summer. Playing a bit-part role for Atletico Madrid will not do him any favours as he prepares to return to the Premier League.

Speaking about Gallagher back in April, Atletico boss Simeone said: “He's a person, first and foremost, that's why sometimes he's better and other times not so much.

"He knows he needs to improve and we've talked about it several times. When you give a lot of good things, then you're asked for more. He gives us a lot of options offensively, he has the speed to finish things off and he's also fast enough for everything defensively. We have to support him so he can continue giving us everything he's already given us."

Spurs will now need to look elsewhere in an attempt to bolster their ranks as Dejan Kulusevski remains out alongside Maddison and Bentancur. Mohammed Kudus is also sidelined while there is a fresh hamstring concern for Richarlison.

Brennan Johnson has also left the club for Crystal Palace.
