'He knows how to...' - Bruno Fernandes made a prediction about Michael Carrick in 2021 at Man United

Michael Carrick is currently the frontrunner to become Manchester United’s interim head coach and it seems like a decision that captain Bruno Fernandes would be on board with.

Darren Fletcher took charge of his final game as interim head coach on Sunday as Manchester United lost 2-1 to Brighton in the FA Cup.

Now, Ineos are planning to appoint a new interim to lead the Red Devils until the end of the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held positive talks over the role, but it seems that Michael Carrick is the leading candidate.

Michael Carrick is the new favourite for the Man Utd interim job, are you happy with this?

Michael Carrick was United’s caretaker boss in 2021 when he took temporary charge following Solskjaer’s sacking. He led the Red Devils for three matches, winning against Villarreal and Arsenal before leaving the club.

Bruno Fernandes praised Michael Carrick’s management

In his final game as caretaker boss, Carrick led United to a 3-2 victory over Arsenal. Bruno Fernandes scored the first of United’s three goals.

In his post-match interview, Fernandes spoke extremely highly of Carrick and even predicted he would go on to become a “top” manager.

As quoted by the Daily Mail, Fernandes said: “I’ve said to him I was really mad to be off on his first game and I tell him now at the end of this game.

“But honestly, for me, Michael can be a really good manager in the future if he gets that chance.

“He knows how to speak, he knows a lot of football. He was one of the great players that not a lot of people talk about. For what I have seen he can be a top coach.”

Bruno Fernandes’ future will be decided by next manager

Last summer, Fernandes rejected a big-money Saudi move in an ultimate show of loyalty to United.

However, Fernandes stayed at United for Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach played a pivotal role in convincing the club captain to stay, but he has since been sacked.

Rumours of Saudi interest in Fernandes refuse to go away, and it will likely be a dominant storyline over the summer once again.

Fernandes’ contract is valid until 2027, so United’s last chance to cash in on him could be this summer. Ideally, though, he would stay put at Old Trafford and continue to lead by example.

Clearly Fernandes is a big admirer of Carrick and his management style, but Ineos are planning a long-term appointment in the summer, and that is what could ultimately decide his future.
