Manchester United didn’t have enough players who suited Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation during his time in charge.

It comes after the Red Devils sacked Ruben Amorim at the start of the January transfer window following a falling out between Amorim and Director of Football Jason Wilcox. Carrick will try to guide United into the Champions League places before a new permanent manager takes charge in the summer.

United will likely revert to a back four under Carrick, after over a year of playing three at the back, with wing-backs under Amorim. The Red Devils didn’t have the players to suit Amorim’s system, which was one of the reasons why the Portuguese manager eventually failed.

Man United bid £30m for Marcos Llorente

In terms of wing-backs, Amorim didn’t have many options. He had to either play Diogo Dalot or Amad Diallo out of position on the right, and only had Patrick Dorgu as a proper wing-back on the left, so it was no surprise that his 3-4-3 never worked.

However, it is understood that United are moving to sign a full-back who would have been perfect under Amorim. According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, United have made a £30m bid to sign Atletico Madrid right-back Marcos Llorente, who loves to get forward as a wing-back under Diego Simeone.

The report claims that Man United view the 30-year-old as a versatile defender who can help bolster their options at the back, without breaking the bank. He has been at Atletico since 2019, and has since made over 270 appearances. Llorente has shown his attacking quality this season, as he has scored three goals in four Champions League matches.

Based on his profile and role for Atletico, Llorente would have been a player that Amorim would have loved for United, because he is so effective as a wing-back. But if Man United do sign him, they will likely play him as a full-back in a back four.

United could make a double Atletico Madrid swoop

It is understood that Gallagher is expected to cost just £26m, which, for a 25-year-old midfielder with Premier League and Champions League experience, is somewhat of a steal.

Seeing as United are desperate for more quality options in midfield, Gallagher seems a safe and solid signing, who could really boost Man United’s midfield. If they were to sign both Madrid players, Carrick could have some real quality to work with for the rest of the season.
