Michael Carrick looks set to be returning to Manchester United as interim manager until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.

The Portuguese boss was shown the exit door at Old Trafford earlier this month, ending a wretched 14 months in charge and a tumultuous relationship with club chiefs who opted to employ him.

Darren Fletcher stepped in to take caretaker charge of United’s two games last week following Amorim’s exit, a 2-2 draw against Burnley and a 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton in the FA Cup, meaning all Carrick appears to have left to play for is to secure Champions League football.

Carrick was one of the two frontrunners for the job, and he appears to have won the race over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to lead United until the summer, when INEOS and the Glazers will hire a permanent manager.

The 44-year-old is in line to return to the job he previously held for three games following Solskjaer’s sacking in 2021 and will be supported by his stunning wife Lisa Roughead.

Lisa, 44, is a university educated Pilates instructor and was one of the infamous Baden-Baden WAGs at the 2006 World Cup.

She made the trip to Germany to support the midfielder, who she has been dating since they were at school together in Tyneside. The following year they tied the knot and have two children, a daughter and a son, together. Their son Jacey, 15, plays in the United academy.

Lisa also helps run the Michael Carrick Foundation, which strives to create opportunities for disadvantaged young people.

If her previous defence of her husband is anything to go by, Lisa is a fiery character after she hit out at Roy Keane following his criticism of Carrick’s post-match interview of United’s 2-0 away defeat to Olympiakos in the Champions League under David Moyes.

Keane branded the former England international’s interview as “flat - just like the team's performance".

Lisa immediately took to Twitter to slam: "Roy Keane what a ****, says anything to provoke a reaction."

Following the removal of her initial message, she subsequently posted: "Deleted my tweet. Emotions got the better of me... just disappointed."
