Macclesfield Town jokingly confirmed that they would not be signing Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes hours after the Reds were knocked out of the FA Cup. United were beaten 2-1 by Brighton in their third-round clash at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Benjamin Sesko scored what proved to be a consolation goal for United in the defeat, with goals from Brajan Gruda and Danny Welbeck knocking the Reds out of the competition.
A day earlier, though, Macclesfield secured one of the most historic victories in FA Cup history by beating holders Crystal Palace. The Silkmen, currently playing in the sixth tier of English football, claimed a 2-1 win over Palace at the Leasing.com Stadium.
On Monday, Macclesfield joked that they would not be signing Fernandes in a post on social media.
“Contrary to reports last night, we can confirm that Bruno Fernandes will not be joining the Silkmen,” read a post from Macclesfield’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday. “However, we have an equally exciting midfielder joining.”
The midfielder mentioned in the post who signed for Macclesfield went on to be Elliot Osborne, who arrived following his exit from Altrincham.
The post from Macclesfield about Fernandes comes hours after the United captain’s X account was hacked. The Reds confirmed in their own post that Fernandes’ account had been hijacked, issuing a warning to fans.
"Bruno Fernandes’s X account has been hacked,” United’s statement read. “Supporters should not engage with any of the posts or direct messages."
Several posts were made from Fernandes’s account during the hack, which lasted for more than an hour on Sunday night.
Sources have since confirmed that Fernandes’s account is now secure following the hack, with the United captain having 4.5million followers on X.
There has been intense speculation about Fernandes’s future at United ever since last summer, when the Portugal international was the subject of interest from clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
Fernandes is under contract with United until the summer of 2027, with the Reds also having the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
