Title chasers "in talks" with United to sign "incredible" wonderkid with a lethal right foot - report

Manchester United are reportedly in talks with a League One outfit over a loan transfer for Ethan Wheatley.

Wheatley recalled

Earlier today, United released a statement confirming that Wheatley has been recalled from his loan spell with Northampton Town.

Wheatley joined Northampton in the summer to gain valuable first-team experience. He endured a slow start to life at the club but his fortunes eventually improved and he went on to become a key player under Kevin Nolan.

He made 25 appearances for the Cobblers, contributing three goals during that period.

According to the Manchester Evening News’ Steven Railston, United deemed Wheatley’s loan at Northampton a successful one.

However, the Red Devils decided that they would prefer him to develop elsewhere.

Bradford City have now emerged as a potential loan transfer destination for Wheatley, with United in talks over a transfer before the close of the winter window.

Bradford’s stronger standing in League One, compared to Northampton, may be a key reason United prefer this move for Wheatley over staying with Nolan’s side.

Bradford currently lie in third place, six points adrift of table leaders Cardiff City. Northampton are in 20th position.

Should the transfer be completed, it would represent Wheatley’s third loan stint.

The 19-year-old, who has been hailed as a “incredible”, spent time with Walsall last season and became United’s 250th academy graduate when he came on from the bench to make his debut during a meeting with Sheffield United in April 2024.
