Mainoo starts, formation change: How Manchester United could line up under Michael Carrick - gallery

United sacked Ruben Amorim as head coach a week ago and appointed Darren Fletcher as the interim as they looked to appoint a new caretaker boss. Carrick is ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the running for the job to take charge of the next 17 matches, before the club will appoint a permanent successor to Amorim at the end of the season.

Carrick will look to make his own mark on the United side should he get the job, and could build upon the blueprints laid by Fletcher with a similar 4-3-2-1 approach. The 44-year-old also experimented with a back three during his time at Middlesbrough, but has a preference for a fast tempo attacking set-up.
