Michael Carrick is set to be named Manchester United’s new manager until the end of the season.
Manchester United have been trying to chart a new path forward since sacking Ruben Amorim suddenly at the start of the year.
Many fans have been left frustrated by Ineos‘ decision-making process, that saw Darren Fletcher placed in temporary charge for two games, before settling on an interim.

Last week it appeared that former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the favourite to land the interim job.
But now it is Carrick who has the edge, after impressing Ineos during behind the scenes talks.
Carrick’s progress in landing the role is no surprise – with Ineos actually lining him up as a potential interim boss several months ago.

Carrick to United considered earlier
United In Focus reported after Manchester United’s defeat to Brentford at the end of September that Michael Carrick was being considered for an interim role.

This was ahead of United’s home game with Sunderland, which we won 2-0, but if we had lost that fixture, the tide would have turned against Ruben Amorim. United were 14th in the table heading into the game.
We reported: “UIF understands that Michael Carrick has been sounded out as a potential interim if Amorim is sacked.
“It is understood that the former midfielder would be open to taking charge of the side if needed.”
United ended up going on a three-game winning run, with victories over Sunderland, Liverpool and Brighton, that saw all pressure on Amorim subside.
It is no surprise that Carrick is prominent in the running for the job now it has not come up again.

Ineos were caught by surprise this time
While Manchester United were prepared for the worst case scenario earlier this season, Ineos were clearly caught unawares by the need to fire Ruben Amorim at the start of January.
Amorim played a part in forcing his own sacking by clashing with Ineos behind the scenes, and it spiralled out of control suddenly.
This meant that while Carrick was explored as an option earlier this season, the situation had lost all urgency.
Ineos were not prepared to fire Amorim, and when they did, no plan was in place other than to promote Darren Fletcher.
