Bruno Fernandes was close to leaving the club in the summer transfer window, but he opted to stay.

Man United are in a period of major uncertainty at the moment, as they are on the hunt for their next long-term managerial option, after sacking Ruben Amorim at the start of the month.

Whoever the new manager is in the summer, it is not clear whether they will have Bruno Fernandes in their squad, as the Man United captain will have just one year left on his contract, amid growing reports which suggest he could leave at the end of the season.

Fernandes ‘will leave’ in the summer

Bruno Fernandes nearly left Man United last summer amid interest from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, but he wanted to stay at Old Trafford. However, the 31-year-old is unlikely to sign a new contract at the club, and with his current deal due to expire in June 2027, a decision has to be made on his future.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Fernandes has decided on his future, and it isn’t great news for United fans. They report that the Portuguese midfielder has lost faith in the ownership at United amid the ever-changing manager position. It is understood, he is more and more unhappy at the club and wants to leave in the summer.

The report claims that Fernandes doesn’t want to ‘waste’ the rest of his prime years at a club without real aspirations in the near future, and that he ‘will leave’ in the summer, but it is just not clear where yet.

It says: “The 31-year-old Portuguese midfielder believes Manchester United 's sporting project has lost its way. Decisions, results, and a lack of genuine competitiveness have led to a cumulative decline that will be difficult to reverse.”

Saudi Pro League sides will no doubt show an interest in Fernandes again, as he could be a real poster boy for the division, but it hasn’t been said whether the Man United star would be willing to make that move yet.

Fernandes was hurt by Man United in the summer

Over the summer, there were discussions of a £100m deal with Al-Hilal for Fernandes to leave Man United, and the club were understood to be all for it. However, the player himself didn’t want to leave the club.

"I decided to stay, also because of family reasons, but because I genuinely like the club. The conversation with the manager also made me stay. But, from the club’s side, I felt a bit like, ‘if you leave, it’s not so bad for us.’ It hurts me a lot. More than hurting, it makes me sad because I’m a player; they have nothing to criticise about. I’m always available, I always play, good or bad.”

It seems as though Fernandes’ stance on staying at United is waning, and it looks like he could finally leave after six years at the club in the summer transfer window.
