Kobbie Mainoo has been tipped to stay at Manchester United beyond the January transfer window after months of speculation about his future. Mainoo has previously been linked with a move away from United this winter after spending the majority of the season on the bench.

Ruben Amorim’s departure as United head coach last week has led to rumours that Mainoo may not be heading for the exit door at Old Trafford before the February 2 deadline.

United handed Darren Fletcher the job on an interim basis, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick being linked with being appointed on a caretaker basis until the end of the season. Carrick is understood to be leading the race with the former midfielder close to agreeing a return.

There had been rumours suggesting that Mainoo could leave United on loan this window in order to get more minutes, but that could be about to change.

Transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that United may not look to part ways with Mainoo before the deadline after Amorim’s exit, with Napoli previously being linked with a move for the midfielder.

“I think things will change for Kobbie Mainoo after this,” Di Marzio told AceOdds.com. “I hope Man Utd make another mistake like they did with [Scott] McTominay and [Rasmus] Hojlund. Players that were not performing at Man Utd are top performers at other teams. It's good for us in Italy and Napoli.”

“In Italy, we say, ‘there is no two without three’. So obviously Napoli said after McTominay and Hojlund, we’ll try to get Mainoo too.”

“With a new coach I don't think they'll try to sell Mainoo and will try to give him more minutes.”

The view of Mainoo being more likely to stay at Old Trafford is shared by United legend Dwight Yorke, who has explained why he thinks staying at the club would be the best move.

“Would I go on loan if I were Kobbie Mainoo? I've never been on loan, when you hear players go on loan,” Yorke told PokerScout.

“Even as a young kid, the club never allowed me to go on loan. That's when you kind of realise how good you were.

“Normally a young kid who's not playing, you go on loan, but they didn't allow me to go on loan. So that speaks volumes. I had no other ambition but to be the best until over that period of time, and I managed to accomplish that.”
