Manchester United are close to hiring Michael Carrick as their interim manager but the search continues for a permanent replacement for Ruben Amorim
Manchester United are closing in on the appointment of Michael Carrick as the club’s interim manager until the end of the season - but they still have work to do as they seek a permanent replacement to Ruben Amorim.
The Red Devils made the move to sack Amorim last week and have held talks with Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the interim position. The Norwegian had been the favourite heading into the weekend but in the last 48 hours, Carrick has become the leading contender.
However, the United hierarchy need to get their next appointment right for the summer as they seek to add a permanent manager once the season comes to a close.
Speaking about the former Southampton boss when he was in charge of Spurs, Sir Alex said: “Well the manager has been fantastic.
“They have a bad record of managers, there is no doubt about that. They have had so many over the years, but this lad has composure.
“You never see him ruffled and the way his team play is a testimony to the work he is doing.
“The most important thing for English football is how many English and young players are in his team.”
Pochettino took Spurs to the 2019 Champions League final and while the North London club won the Europa League last season - they have failed to be as consistent at the top level since Pochettino’s exit.
His former player Andros Townsend said of him back in 2021 when speaking to talkSPORT: “Having played under Poch, I’d like to see him win the Champions League.
“He deserves to win it, all of his work at Southampton that went unnoticed and the incredible job he did at Spurs. Because it didn't end with a trophy, for some reason the general public don't give him any credit for taking Tottenham from also-rans to the Champions League final.
“He’s one of the best managers, if not THE best manager in the world, name me one other manager who can do what he did in a five-year period with Spurs, taking them from mediocrity when he took over to the envy of Europe and to the Champions League final.
“I don’t think any other manager can do what he did so, for me, he is the very best. It’s not all about winning trophies.
He added: “I know how good a manager he is and he deserves to get all the accolades managers like Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp get.”
Pochettino is currently in charge of the USA but could be available after the World Cup his summer.
