Michael Carrick has identified who he wants as his assistant manager for his interim spell in charge of Man Utd

Woodgate has had brief spells in charge of Middlesbrough and Bournemouth but has not been a manager since 2021. He was part of Carrick’s coaching staff for the ex-Tottenham man’s entire time in charge at the Riverside Stadium.

He is best known for a playing career that saw him make his professional debut with Leeds United. He had five years at Elland Road before joining Newcastle United and then making a big move to Real Madrid.

His time in Spain was blighted by injuries as he then returned to England with Middlesbrough and also played for Tottenham Hotspur and Stoke City before retiring with Boro in 2016.

Sky Sports report that Carrick wants to bring him to Old Trafford but add it’s not clear if United are willing to hand the former Leeds man a short-term deal to join Carrick at the club, as talks continue over who his backroom staff will be.

Darren Fletcher has been in charge for the last two games with United drawing with Burnley and then losing to Brighton and Hove Albion. There may be a coaching role available for the ex-United midfielder.

The Red Devils’ record goalscorer responded: "Of course I would. It's a no-brainer.

"I'm not begging a job here by the way. Just so everyone knows, if I was asked to go in of course I would. Appointing the manager is the most important thing."

He added: "Whether Michael goes in or if that's Fletch [Darren Fletcher] or John O'Shea or myself, it needs people who know the football club," added Rooney, who has recently been on holiday with Carrick and his family in Barbados.

"Roy Keane - I know Roy has had his opinions, I said about Roy going in earlier in the season. Having people who know the club, who care for the club and understand what it takes to be a Manchester United player - that's where the club needs to be.

"The club has lost its identity, it's lost that family feel, if you like. Whether it's Ole [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer] or Michael, this is an opportunity to bring that back, bring the spirit of Manchester United back to the football club.”
