The 44-year-old United legend and fellow Red Devils legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were earmarked as the clear favourites for the aforementioned role at the club.

Speaking on his podcast, Ben Foster said that the priority for the Man Utd caretaker boss will be the key objective of competing for the Premier League top four.
“They need Champions League football,” he said on ‘Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast.’
“That’s all… the only thing they can get now. They’re out of the FA Cup, out of the League Cup, they ain’t got no European football.
“All they can hope for now is hanging their hat on, play one game a week, every single Saturday or Sunday, whatever it is, trying to win that Premier League game to try and get in that top four.”

Carrick is tipped to lead the United first-team training at the Carrington complex on Wednesday after his appointment is made at the Red Devils on Tuesday.
The former England midfielder’s first match as Man Utd caretaker manager would be the Manchester derby clash against second-place Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Foster is convinced that a top-four Premier League finish would be enough to ensure that Carrick would “100 per cent” become the next permanent United manager.

“And if Michael Carrick does come in and does do that, he will get the job 100 per cent,” he continued.
“But if he does that, he probably deserves it as well, because I don’t know what the answer is for a manager for Man United. I really don’t.
“As long as you can get them playing, that’s it.”
United are currently seventh in the Premier League table and the Red Devils are three points behind fourth-place Liverpool after 21 league matches played.
