Michael Carrick has been pictured at Carrington ahead of his appointment as Manchester United interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Carrick has arrived at the training centre and his appointment is expected to be announced imminently. United have decided to appoint the former midfielder as interim after impressing during the interview process.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also in contention for the interim role, but Carrick has won the race for the job and will oversee his first training session at Carrington on Wednesday morning. Ruben Amorim was sacked after just 14 months in charge amid rising tensions with the United hierarchy.
Darren Fletcher oversaw games against Burnley and Brighton as caretaker boss, but Carrick will oversee the second half of the Premier League campaign as interim United head coach. Carrick has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough last year. He guided Boro to the play-offs in 2022/23 but was sacked in June after finishing 10th in 2024/25.
The 44-year-old's first game in charge of United will come against Manchester City this weekend. Then a visit to the Premier League leaders Arsenal will follow the Manchester derby.
Carrick returns to Old Trafford after a brief stint as caretaker in 2021/22, in which he won games against Villarreal and Chelsea, and drew against Arsenal, to leave the role with an undefeated record.
