Carrick bringing Southgate ally to Man Utd who got sacked after four months in last job

Michael Carrick is set to bring former England assistant manager Steve Holland to Manchester United as his number two. Carrick has agreed to take charge of United until the end of the season after Ruben Amorim was sacked.

Carrick is expected to be in the dugout for Saturday's Premier League derby against Manchester City. The 44-year-old's return to United comes afte he was given three games after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's exit in 2021. Alongside Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans, Holland will join Carrick as his number two for the rest of the season. Holland was a key part of Gareth Southgate's success with England, leading them to the Euro 2021 and 2024 finals.

He spent a number of years with Chelsea prior to joining the national team. Holland received glowing praise from Southgate during their time at Wembley, with the 55-year-old a key figure on the training ground.

However, his latest job in football ended abruptly when he sacked by Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos in April after only four months in charge. In 15 games, Holland won just five, with a run of seven matches without a win leading to his dismissal.

During England, he was involved in a major bust-up with Arsenal's Ben White. The defender withdraw from the 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar due to 'personal reasons', before reports revealed he had fallen out with Holland.

The Telegraph reported that the rift sparked by Holland questioning White's interest in football during the tournament. Southgate's question supposedly asked Kyle Walker a question in relation to Manchester City's performances, before posing the same question to White about the Gunners.
