Michael Carrick is set to take the reins at Manchester United, with former England No.2 Steve Holland stepping in as his right-hand man - but Darren Fletcher will not join them. Carrick and Holland will conduct their first training session on Wednesday. Carrick's confirmation as interim head coach is expected later today.
Holland, 55, a crucial figure during Gareth Southgate's tenure as England manager, makes a return to the Premier League following an extensive spell at Chelsea. His most recent managerial role ended with his dismissal from Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos in April. Joining Carrick's coaching team are Jonny Evans, Jonathan Woodgate and Travis Binnion.
Woodgate, a former Leeds United, Newcastle and England defender, previously served as Carrick's deputy at Middlesbrough.
Meanwhile, Evans and Binnion lent their expertise to Darren Fletcher for the matches against Burnley and Brighton last week. Evans joined as a first-team coach ahead of the Turf Moor clash, while Binnion, promoted from his academy position, will remain with the first-team squad for the rest of the season.
However, Fletcher, who managed a draw at Burnley and a loss at Brighton during his brief stint in charge, will revert to overseeing the Under-18s.
At 41, Fletcher understood that his temporary leadership was limited to two games and he was never seriously considered for the end-of-season role, as United sought more experienced hands for the remainder of the campaign.
The Scottish coach was given the opportunity to remain on the first-team staff under Carrick, but he chose to resume his position as head coach of the Under-18s for the remainder of the season.
Carrick became a leading contender for the role after impressing Chief Executive Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox during in-person discussions last Thursday. His managerial debut will be at the Manchester derby at Old Trafford this Saturday.
