An unlikely name has emerged as to who will succeed Ruben Amorim at Manchester United as the board continue to search for the right man to lead the club back to its glory days. The club continue to search for their new head coach after Amorim received his P45 moments after a surprise rant after their draw against Leeds United.
Currently, the United job has been closely linked with familiar faces since Darren Fletcher took the interim job and has been a strong favourite to takeover after reports Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's potential return to Old Trafford has been blocked. However, since that development, it looks more than likely that former Red Devils midfielder Michael Carrick will take over the club in a caretaker role for the foreseeable future.
Names have been thrown out about who could or should takeover Man United as they look to find themselves back in the Champions League - just days after losing in the FA Cup Third Round to Brighton & Hove Albion and confirming a 40-game season which will be their shortest campaign in more than 100 years.
However, a new name has been thrown into the mix just a day after his sacking from a Spanish giant club and it will be one not many United fans will be happy with his close links to a certain Merseyside club. Xabi Alonso, just days after his sacking at Real Madrid, has emerged as a strong contender to succeed the Portuguese boss with his odds shorten dramatically overnight.
Alonso, who enjoyed five years at the club's arch-rivals Liverpool, has an impressive coaching CV with his achievements at Bayer Leverkusen and has seen his odds slashed from 33/1 to 10/1 making him one of stronger contenders alongside Oliver Glasner and Thomas Tuchel.
Betfred’s Robert Ford said: “After leaving his role at Real Madrid yesterday evening, Liverpool legend Xabi Alonso has been cut from 33/1 into 10/1 to be the manager of Manchester United next season.
“Michael Carrick, who’s expected to be announced today as the club’s interim manager, continues to lead the way in the market at 4/7 odds-on, whilst Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner trails Carrick at 4/1.
“Alonso is sandwiched in the odds between England boss Thomas Tuchel at 8/1 and former Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate at 14s.
“Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, PSG’s Luis Enrique and former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer trail the leading quintet in the market at 16s.”
His strong association with Liverpool will leave a sour taste in the mouth of many United fans but nonetheless could be a suitable fit to transform the club back to where they used to be.
