Michael Carrick is set to be named as Manchester United's interim boss - and he could be bringing some familiar faces with him.

Carrick, 44, was seen heading into Carrington on Tuesday morning, after reports he'd pipped Ole Gunnar Solskajer to the vacant post at the Premier League giants following their sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this month. The former England midfielder looks set to lead them until the end of the season.

And he will have some familiar faces to try and turn around the Red Devils' sinking ship - with a controversial cast lined up. According to BBC Sport, Carrick will bring Steve Holland, who was Gareth Southgate's No.2 with England, in as his right-hand man.

United have been linked with the former Three Lions boss, before Amorim was handed the role 14 months ago. However, his No.2, who has previously held top jobs at Crewe Alexander and Japanese giants Yokohama F. Marinos, will land a role at Old Trafford.

Holland's best remembered for his alleged infamous bust-up with Ben White, which resulted in the Arsenal defender flying home from the 2022 World Cup and refusing to play for his country ever since.

He left the England set up with Southgate after the Euro 2024 final, and prior to the appointment of Thomas Tuchel.

The pair will be joined by former Leeds man and Real Madrid calamity Jonathan Woodgate. Woodgate turned out for the Red Devils' bitter rivals in Yorkshire alongside Jason Wilcox, who is now above him at Old Trafford as football director.

However, he was part of Carrick's staff at Middlesbrough, where the former midfielder managed between 2022 and 2025, saving them from relegation and taking them to the Championship play-offs and a League Cup semi-final.

United legend Jonny Evans is also on Carrick’s backroom staff, along with long-serving youth team coach Travis Binnion. Caretaker manager Darren Fletcher was handed the opportunity to join them, but elected to move back to his role with U18s.

Fletcher has been the man in the dugout since the sacking of Amorim - and in that time he's drawn with Burnley and been dumped out of the FA Cup by Brighton.

Carrick is expected to take charge for the crunch Manchester derby on Saturday lunchtime. Manchester City got back to winning ways in the FA Cup - hitting 10 past minnows Exeter City.

However, they have drawn their last three games in the Premier League and have surrendered ground to Arsenal as a result. Meanwhile, the Red Devils have been slipping and sliding down the table, as Carrick will inherit a team that sits in seventh in the league.
