After Carrick: Man Utd make ‘best manager in the world’ one of their main targets - report

Manchester United have identified Paris Saint-Germain boss Luis Enrique as one of the top targets in their search for a new permanent manager, Mirror journalist Jeremy Cross has revealed.

The Old Trafford side are set to announce Michael Carrick as the new interim head coach on Tuesday, with the former United midfielder penning a deal until the end of the season.

United have delayed a move to appoint a new permanent manager until the summer, as they want to take their time before making a decision on their next full-time appointment.

Enrique is said to be held in high regard by Old Trafford chiefs, along with England boss Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Carlo Ancelotti.

According to Cross, Manchester United are searching for a coach with a ‘winning pedigree’ for their next permanent managerial appointment.

Enrique, who has won an impressive 19 major trophies during his time with Barcelona and PSG, more than fits that criteria, with some even praising the Spaniard as the ‘best manager in the world’.

United chiefs reportedly want to appoint someone who can handle the significant pressure and expectations that come with being in charge, and a move for Enrique would be a step in that direction.

The Spanish tactician’s future at PSG has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, as Enrique will be entering the final 12 months of his contract in June.

If he does not agree a new deal, United would reportedly not be required to pay a massive amount of compensation to secure Enrique’s arrival this summer.

A former right midfielder, Enrique retired from the professional game in 2004 and four years later became head coach of Barcelona B.

After spending three years with the Catalan youth side, the Spanish tactician had season-long stints at Roma and Celta Vigo before being appointed Barcelona manager in the summer of 2014.

Enrique led Barcelona to two La Liga titles, three Spanish Cups and a Champions League title in 2015 during his three seasons at the club.

Following a four-year stint with the Spanish national side, Enrique took over at PSG in the summer of 2023 and has won almost every possible trophy during his two-and-a-half years at Parc des Princes, including the Champions League title last season.

As GIVEMESPORT previously reported, Man United are also admirers of Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who was considered by the club before Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in 2024.

The Red Devils could return for the Italian manager after the season, when De Zerbi will have a year left on his contract with the Ligue 1 club.
