Former Man United striker Wayne Rooney thinks that the Red Devils could end up appointing Michael Carrick as permanent manager.
The Red Devils are heading into the Manchester derby this weekend with yet another new manager. After sacking Ruben Amorim, United had Darren Fletcher as their interim, but have now appointed former midfielder Michael Carrick to take over for the rest of the season.
Carrick had been an assistant at Man United in the past, and also has experience managing in the Championship with Middlesbrough. He will take charge until the summer, when Man United are expected to appoint Amorim’s permanent successor.

It was seemingly between Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take over as manager for the rest of the season, but instead of getting Solskjaer back, United opted to appoint Carrick. The last time that Ole was appointed as interim, he ended up landing the permanent job.
Rooney says Carrick could become permanent Man United boss
As mentioned, Solskjaer ended up becoming the permanent manager at Old Trafford after a very successful interim spell. He was in charge for three seasons, helping United to finish second in the 2020/21 season.
Former Man United striker Wayne Rooney has said there is a chance that the same thing could happen with Carrick, if he does a good job as a caretaker boss. Rooney said on the Wayne Rooney Show: “He [Carrick] knows that club inside out.
“He lives and breathes that club, and that’s what the club needs. Then it’s an opportunity for Michael to show what he can do over the next few months, and make the owners look at him and say ‘do you know what, we don’t need to look elsewhere’.It’s going to be a very difficult job to get a connection and get this group of players together.”
In terms of potential permanent head coach options in the summer, some of the most-tipped names have been Thomas Tuchel, Oliver Glasner, Mauricio Pochettino, and Julian Nagelsmann.
