Manchester United could be about to miss out on a player who has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. And it seems that the player could be about to link up with former United star Scott McTominay.

United sold McTominay to Napoli in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth £26.4million (€30.5 million), with the midfielder going on to flourish at the Serie A giants since his Old Trafford exit.

The Scotland international helped Napoli win the Serie A title last season, scoring 21 goals across 63 appearances, including eight this season.

Despite already having McTominay in their ranks, Italian news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is now a target.

The report even goes so far as to claim that Napoli have already agreed a deal with Gomes about a move to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, but are yet to agree a fee with Wolves for the Brazil international.

United have previously been linked with signing Gomes, with the rumours stretching back to 2022 when the midfielder was at Flamengo.

Gomes went on to move to the Premier League in 2023, but instead chose to join Wolves rather than United and has been linked with a switch to Old Trafford once again ever since last summer.

However, based on the latest reports from Italy, it seems that Napoli have the advantage in the race to sign Gomes, which would see McTominay be on the same team as the Brazilian midfielder.

Reports in recent weeks have also speculated that McTominay could return to United, although these suggestions were dismissed by Napoli’s sporting director Giovanni Manna.

When asked about Napoli’s plans for the January transfer window, Manna outlined McTominay’s importance to the club’s current squad.

"We're waiting for [Frank] Anguissa, who is an important player, to come back," Manna said. "We've missed him a lot. McTominay is showing that he can be decisive in that role. The coach will make his evaluations."
