Michael Carrick will be the man to take over at Manchester United in the interim after the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The former midfielder's plans in the January transfer window have also reportedly been disclosed.

Amorim was shown the exit door after just 14 months at the helm, and Darren Fletcher was left in charge of United's 2-2 draw against Burnley in the Premier League and a disappointing FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton last time out.

But it has now been revealed that Carrick is the coach who'll take United to the end of the season, as the search for a permanent successor to Amorim rolls on.

Michael Carrick's transfer plans revealed

According to The Athletic, Carrick, who previously took over at United as caretaker manager for three matches after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked, will not see the club's long-term transfer plans change for him.

Before his appointment, it was disclosed that during this window, United would only move for long-term targets should they become available, or to prevent rival teams from poaching them.

These players reportedly include Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba. A new update claims that under Carrick this will not change and there won't be a case of signing any new players for the new head coach specifically.

In the coming windows, United supposedly wish to recruit two new midfielders to add to their team, with Elliot Anderson their first-choice target in that area.

Academy winger waves goodbye

As Carrick arrives, there has been an exit at Carrington. Young academy winger Sam Mather has announced he has left the club after spending 14 years amongst their ranks.

The Salford-born wide player signed his first professional contract with the club in 2021 and was part of an FA Youth Cup-winning squad. He went with United on their pre-season tour of the United States in 2024.

Having spent most of last season on loan at Tranmere Rovers, he has now joined Turkish Super Lig side Kayserispor and released a heartfelt farewell on Instagram.

"After 14 years my time at Man Utd has come to an end," wrote Mather. "I would like to thank all the staff and players who have helped me become the person and player I am today.

"I will always be grateful for my time here and wish the club all the best. On a personal note, it's time for me to move forward and I can't wait to get started!"
