Man Utd confirm Carrick as interim manager after Solskjaer battle

Back home: Michael Carrick has returned to Manchester United as interim boss

Manchester United have officially named Michael Carrick as their new interim manager until the end of the season.

The former midfielder, who played 464 times for the club winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League, returns to Old Trafford having left his position as a first-team coach back in 2021.

Carrick worked under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in that role before stepping in to take charge in a caretaker capacity when Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021.

The former England international emerged as the leading candidate for the temporary position on Monday, ahead of the Norwegian, who had also held discussions over a potential return.

Now he will take his place in the United dugout once more, with his first game coming this weekend in the Manchester derby.

He will be joined on the bench by his new-look backroom staff, which includes former Chelsea and England assistant manager Steve Holland, his old first-team coach at Middlesbrough Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, United’s Under-21s head coach, and Jonny Evans, who makes a sharp return to the club after leaving his position as loans manager earlier in the campaign.

Goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson will also form part of Carrick’s team.

Carrick will lock horns with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime, before a trip to Arsenal the following weekend.

Carrick’s remit will be to lead United in their final 17 games of the campaign, with the Premier League the only remaining front they are competing on after their FA Cup exit last time out.

Darren Fletcher, Carrick’s ex-team-mate, has overseen the senior side for the last two games following Ruben Amorim’s sacking last week, and the Scot led United to a 2-2 draw at Burnley and a 2-1 home defeat by Brighton in the FA Cup.

Fletcher moved up from his position as the head coach of United’s U18 side to take the reins, but he will quickly hand them over to Carrick before the Red Devils welcome their neighbours to Old Trafford on Saturday. Fletcher has returned to his U18s role.
