Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has delivered an emotional message on social media after news that former teammate Michael Carrick has been appointed Reds' interim head coach. The former Middlesbrough manager has been tasked with leading the team until the end of the season.

United's unexpected decision to give Ruben Amorim the boot just over a week ago saw Darren Fletcher step in as interim manager. However, the Scotsman's stint was marked by a disappointing draw against relegation-bound Burnley and an FA Cup exit at the hands of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Carrick now shoulders the hefty responsibility of turning United's fortunes around following a lacklustre season last term that saw them miss out on European football and lose the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the challenges, the new temporary boss will be aware that there's still much at stake with a potential top four or five finish and a chance to compete in next season's Champions League.

And Ferdinand, who won numerous trophies alongside Carrick as a player at Old Trafford, has sent a message on Instagram after news of the ex-midfielder's appointment was confirmed.

He said: "Congrats my man @carras16! The biggest honour!

"After a difficult couple of weeks, it's time to get behind Carras & the team… starting with the Manchester derby on the weekend! Good Luck."

Speaking to United's official website after news of his appointment was confirmed, Carrick said: "Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour.

“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

The Reds may sit seventh in the Premier League table, but they only sit three points off fourth, which would guarantee a place in Europe's elite competition and a much-needed financial boost.

Carrick will, though, have to navigate a tricky couple of fixtures across his first few games with title challengers Manchester City and Arsenal to come over the next few weeks.

Jason Wilcox, director of football, said: “Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.

"He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”
