Talk of formations, styles of play, and footballing philosophy dominated conversations during Ruben Amorim’s tenure as Manchester United head coach.

Amorim’s tendency to play a 3-4-2-1 formation was often controversial, and ultimately, Jason Wilcox intervened tactically to make him change.

Michael Carrick’s style of play has been developed throughout his time as a player under Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as during stints as assistant to Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Now that United have confirmed Carrick’s appointment, he has told United fans exactly what they can expect.

Michael Carrick explains his style of play

Carrick’s first words as United coach expressed his excitement at returning to Old Trafford, and now he has a chance to compete for Champions League qualification this season.

In his first full interview on MUTV, Michael Carrick was asked about his style of play and this is what he had to say:

“We want to win games,” Carrick said. “It goes without saying that we want to win games. There’s different ways of doing it, different scenarios, different situations in game where we might have to play different ways.

“For me it’s working with the players, I love working with the players and helping them to get better individually which will help the team improve.

“We’re all in it together, and it’s important that we all look after each other.

“I know it comes down to results, and hopefully we can play an exciting type of football and be positive and bring excitement. I want to be off my seat and enjoy watching the boys play.”

Michael Carrick has Jose Mourinho’s pragmatism

United fans know better than most that winning was always at the forefront of Mourinho’s mind.

The legendary Portuguese manager didn’t always play the most exciting or attractive football, but Mourinho’s pragmatism is the reason he has been so successful as a manager.

Carrick served under Mourinho at United as assistant coach, and it is clear in his comments that Mourinho’s mentality has rubbed off on him.

Mourinho praised Carrick’s coaching and spoke extremely highly of his character.

United fans can expect Carrick to stick to his 4-2-3-1 formation for the next five months, but the style of play will likely change between each match.
