Turkish outfit Galatasaray are in advanced talks to complete the signing of Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte this month, as per reports. The Uruguay international has had to be content with a bit-part role at Old Trafford this season, and could seek a move away from the club.
According to Turkish journalist Yakup Çinar, Galatasaray are intent on adding Ugarte to their squad ahead of the second half of the season. They have submitted a proposal for a loan deal until the end of the campaign, with an option to make the move permanent once the season is over.
Manuel Ugarte joined Manchester United from French giants Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the summer of 2024, a year after he moved to France from Sporting CP. The 24-year-old has struggled to earn a regular starting berth at Old Trafford, with former boss Ruben Amorim often preferring Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in midfield.
Ugarte played 45 times across all competitions for the Red Devils in his debut season, chipping in with two goals and six assists. This term, however, the midfielder has played only 17 times, with only nine of those appearances coming from the start.
Uruguay are set to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer, and Ugarte will hope to play a key role for his country. The midfielder will be looking for more regular minutes at club level to boost his chances of being a major player at the tournament in North America. A move to Galatasaray will enable him to reunite with compatriot Lucas Torreira, who found a home in Turkiye after a tough stint in England.
Manchester United confirm Michael Carrick appointment
Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of former captain and midfielder Michael Carrick as the interim head coach of the club. The Englishman will lead the Red Devils until the end of the season, when a substantive appointment will be made.
Carrick returns to the dugout at Old Trafford for a second stint, having been in charge in an interim capacity for three games in 2021. The former midfielder was appointed ahead of former boss and fellow club legend Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer after both were interviewed for the role.
Michael Carrick last worked with Middlesbrough, spending nearly three years at the club before he was fired last June. He will be assisted by Jonathan Woodgate, Steve Holland, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans, and Craig Mawson. Former interim boss Darren Fletcher has returned to his post in charge of the U-18s.
