Carrick’s United coaching staff were also fully revealed and the 44-year-old former Middlesbrough manager will return to the Old Trafford dugout this weekend.

The United legend will take charge of his first training session with the United first-team squad on Wednesday at the Carrington complex after his appointment.

Carrick emerged as the favourite to land the interim Man Utd head coach role ahead of former Red Devils teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in recent days.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Micah Richards was left wondering what would happen to Carrick’s long-term future if United’s run of form transformed under his watch.

“The only question I would have is what happens if he goes on a really good run?” Richards asked.

The former Manchester City and England defender added: “We know the situation with [Thomas] Tuchel and his contract [with England] running until the end of the World Cup.

“There are some other managers available and that is the one conundrum I see.”

Micah Richards’ feelings on Michael Carrick’s return to Man Utd after Ruben Amorim’s sacking

Carrick’s first match in charge as interim head coach will be against Richards’ former side Manchester City in the Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Richards welcomed the news of Carrick’s return to Old Trafford and believes the prolific former Man Utd midfielder is the right “fit” for the Red Devils right now.

“In terms of the here and right now, I think it’s a good appointment,” he continued.

“Obviously, the confidence looks really low at the moment. A new manager, a new bounce.

“It didn’t quite work with Fletcher the last couple of games. In terms of what they need right now, I think he’s a good fit.

“Long term, it’s yet to be seen, but for right now, I like it.”

Ruben Amorim’s 14-month reign as United manager ended after the Red Devils’ disappointing 1-1 Premier League draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.
