Joao Gomes has insisted he remains fully committed to helping Wolves achieve a miraculous escape from relegation amid speculation linking him with Manchester United. The Brazilian midfielder has been one of the few shining lights for the Black Country club this season.
He has featured in 23 matches across all competitions, with his performances catching the attention of potential suitors. United are reportedly amongst those monitoring his situation, whilst Italian heavyweights Napoli have also been mentioned as admirers.
Gomes could face a pivotal decision regarding his future should Wolves slip into the Championship. However, it seems he is entirely concentrated on delivering for his current employers at present.
Speaking to Globo Esporte, he said: "We are working very hard every day to get Wolves out of this situation. The season ends in May and there is still a long way to go. We ask the fans to keep believing in us because we are very committed to changing the situation the team is in."
He added: "I can only thank everyone who has always trusted me and given me the chance to step onto the pitch to represent Wolves. The affection from the fans is incredible, and I really want to give that back. I will give my life on the pitch so the team can finish the season safe from relegation.", reports the Mirror.
Wolves have demonstrated signs of improvement under Rob Edwards in recent weeks. A draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford was followed by their maiden victory of the campaign as they thrashed West Ham 3-0.
Edwards' team have since secured another draw against Everton, and they also triumphed over Shrewsbury Town with a 6-1 victory in the FA Cup third round at the weekend.
Reflecting on the club's recent form, Gomes stated: "Even before we started this unbeaten run, we were already playing well. We conceded a goal in stoppage time against Arsenal in London after a great performance. We knew it was a matter of making adjustments. These four matches without defeat are not a coincidence."
However, Wolves still face the threat of relegation to the Championship. It seems that Gomes is not particularly eager to follow them down.
He expressed: "It is another dream come true. The Premier League is the biggest national league in the world. Everything here is sensational, from the level of the games to the atmosphere in the stands."
Gomes transferred to Wolves from Brazilian team Flamengo in 2023. Since then, he has made 112 appearances for the club and has three-and-a-half years left on his current contract.
